Lecturer :  Philippe Lepoivre
Language(s) of instruction :
French language

The course describes the approach adopted for the diagnosis of plant pathogens, the main laboratory methods (biological, serological and molecular) and their respective fields of application.
Learning outcomes of the course :
After completing the course the student must show its capacity
  • To understand and to apply a protocol already described (Koch's postulate, insect transmission of viruses, serological tests and molecular tests) and to analyse the significance of the results in a professional context (identification, detection, certification,...) ;
  • To select the most appropriate technique to solve a phytosanitary problem by integrating pathological considerations (objectives of the analysis), regulation as well as the economical constraints (cost, quality assurance,...).
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :
Basics in plant biology, microbiology and molecular biology
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
  • Introduction (lecture)
  • Harvest of the biological data in the field (lecture and group discussion)
  • Laboratory techniques (serological, molecular and biological tests) (laboratory exercices)
  • Evaluation of the results in the context of certification procedures (lecture)
  • Application of the techniques on tropical and subtropical models (group discussion)
Recommended or required readings :
Phytopathologie (P. Lepoivre), 2002, De Boeck
