PHYS3005-2  Magnetism and Nanomagnetism

Duration :  15h Th, 10h Pr
Number of credits :
Extra courses intended for exchange students (Erasmus, ...)First semester3
Lecturer :  Raphaël Hermann
Language(s) of instruction :
English language
Course contents :
Study of magnetism in condensed matter. Review of magnetic concepts, units. Review of basic quantum mechanics concepts, spin and orbital moment. Magnetic interactions. Measurement techniques. Ordered magnetic structures. Low dimension magnetism.
Learning outcomes of the course :
Initiate the student to magnetism and its application. As outcome of this learning, the student will be able to understand and communicate the basic concepts of magnetism in the scientific literature and be able to conduct an elementary analysis of magnetometry data.
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :
The credits of a basic quantum mechanic course and of a basic solid state physics course are required.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
One day laboratory measurements. Exercice sessions during the course.
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
The schedule will be fixed at the beginning of the academic year 09-10 by the Department of Physics.
Recommended or required readings :
Magnetism in Condensed Matter, Stephen Blundell, Oxford Master Series in Condensed Matter Physics, Oxford University Press. Lectures slides will be distributed in printed form.
Assessment methods and criteria :
A written exam for the exercises.
Either presentation of a paper or a written exam for the theory.
