PHYS2007-1  Physics II : optics and thermodynamics

Duration :  25h Th, 15h Pr
Number of credits :
Bachelor in geological sciences, 2nd yearToute l'année4
Lecturer :  John Martin, Alain Seret
Language(s) of instruction :
French language
Course contents :
The course is an introduction to optics and thermodynamics. Optics :
  • Light: nature, production, detection
  • Propagation in matter
  • Geometric optics
  • Wave optics
  • Quantum optics
Thermodynamics :
  • Temperature, thermal expansion
  • Ideal gas law, kinetic theory
  • Heat, work and the first law of thermodynamics
  • Entropy and the second law
  • Phase transformation
Learning outcomes of the course :
Basis of optics and thermodynamic.
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :
Physics course of first year.
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
Optics: face-to-face with active participation of the students (15h) and practical works (9h).
Thermodnamics: face-to-face (10h) and practical works (6h).
Recommended or required readings :
"Optique: première approche" by A. Seret (2011). This book (in french) is available as on-line eBook or pdf files or as a printed book distributed by Editions de l'ULg. A pdf file with short solutions to the exercices proposed in the book is also downloadable.
A pdf version of the slides about thermodynamics will be available on myULg. Suggested reading : "An introduction to Thermal Physics", D. V. Schroeder, Addison Wesley Longman.
Assessment methods and criteria :
The optics exam is a written test covering theory and exercices as well as a written and oral test for the practical part.
The thermodynamics exam is a written test covering theory (60 %) and exercices (40 %).
The tests will be organized in January (optics) or June (thermodynamics) and August. Optics accounts for 60 % of the final mark, and thermodynamics for 40 %.
Organizational remarks :
A. Seret is in charge of the optics and J. Martin of the termodynamics.
