| The course is an introduction to optics and thermodynamics.
Optics :
- Light: nature, production, detection
- Propagation in matter
- Geometric optics
- Wave optics
- Quantum optics
Thermodynamics :
- Temperature, thermal expansion
- Ideal gas law, kinetic theory
- Heat, work and the first law of thermodynamics
- Entropy and the second law
- Phase transformation

| "Optique: première approche" by A. Seret (2011). This book (in french) is available as on-line eBook or pdf files or as a printed book distributed by Editions de l'ULg. A pdf file with short solutions to the exercices proposed in the book is also downloadable.
A pdf version of the slides about thermodynamics will be available on myULg.

Assessment methods and criteria :
 |
| The optics exam is a written test covering theory and exercices as well as a written and oral test for the practical part.
The thermodynamics exam is a written test covering theory (60 %) and exercices (40 %).
The tests will be organized in January (optics) or June (thermodynamics) and August.
Optics accounts for 60 % of the final mark, and thermodynamics for 40 %. |
