| PHYS0960-1 | Physics and medical imaging

| Duration : | 90h Th, 40h Pr, 40h Mon. WS |
| Number of credits : |
| Lecturer : | Alain Seret |
| Coordinator : | Alain Seret |
Language(s) of instruction :
| French language |
Course contents :
| Physics for first-year university students in life sciences : particle mechanics, solid mechanics, thermal physics, fluid mechanics, mechanical waves, electricity and magnetism, electromagnetic waves, optics, quantum physics, nuclear physics. Many concepts are illustrated by an introduction to the physics of medical imaging. |
Learning outcomes of the course :
| Introduction to physics for life sciences and to physics of medical imaging as well as learning of the scientific method. |
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :
| Vectors, units, kinematics, Newton's laws and DC currents.
Basic mathematics (algebra, analyse, elements of geometry and trigonometry) are also needed. |
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
| Experiments are performed in live and video documents are projected during the courses. They are full part of the course contents. The course is accompagnied by practical works where students are teached to the solving of exercices and the use of experimental devices. |
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
| The theoretical course is face-to-face with active participation of the students for the solving of exercices. Much more active participation of the students is expected for the practical works. |
Recommended or required readings :
| Textbooks.
- "Physique" by J. Kane et M. Sternheim, french edition revised for 2004 by M. Hoebeke, P. Ghosez et G. Llabrès. The book is edited by DUNOD. Some complements are available at Editions de l'Université de Liège or can be downloaded from the intranet web site.
- "Optique: première approche" by A. Seret (2011). This book (in french) is available as on-line eBook or pdf files or as a printed book distributed by Editions de l'Université de Liège (Liège, Belgium). A pdf file with short solutions to the exercices proposed in the book is also downloadable.
- "Imagerie médicale - bases physiques" by A. Seret et M. Hoebeke. The book is edited by Editions de l'Université de Liège (Liège, Belgium).
Exercice and solutions manuals are also available at Editions de l'Université de Liège (Liège, Belgium). Laboratory manuals are also available (more informations will be given during the first course). |
