| PHYS0511-2 | Physical and mathematical bases for the sciences of motricity

| Duration : | 50h Th, 15h Pr, 15h QA Sess., 20h REM |
| Number of credits : |
| Lecturer : | Laurent Dreesen |
Language(s) of instruction :
| French language |
Course contents :
| The experimental physics course consists of the following main parts: the motion general laws, the mechanics and the fluids. Oral teaching will be systematically completed with experimental demonstrations. |
Learning outcomes of the course :
| Physics describes the real world. Each topic will be dealt with through concrete observation and experimentation so as to lead students to the theoretical study of specific concepts and notions without ever emphasizing details. We shall focus on fundamental theoretical notions within the students¿ field of interest while providing them with the necessary prerequisite knowledge considering 2nd-year requirements. Whenever possible, the theoretical notions from the different parts of the course will be illustrated with practical applications related to relevant practical courses. |
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :
| The course requires good knowledge of secondary education-level mathematics. We advise the students to attend remedial mathematics classes, which will be organized to refresh basic knowledge and bridge the gap between secondary education and first-year university courses. |
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
| - Practical and exercises sessions are organized in order to illustrate the theoritical courses. To get benefit from these ones, the students are strongly encouraged to read the related theoretical notions before each session.
- Relevant mathematical concepts will be learnt during specific sessions. |
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
| The theoretical course will be taught in the first term. Remedial formative assessment workshops (20 hours) will be organized in the second term for students who failed the exempting test in January. Sessions will begin in February. The schedule will be posted on the notice boards in the physics building. |
Recommended or required readings :
| Reference book:
Physique expérimentale (Experimental Physics)
J. KANE & M. STERHEIM, Physique, Dunod, Paris, third edition corrected by P. Ghosez, M. Hoebeke, G. Llabrès
Students are recommended to buy the book as it is used for both theoretical classes and practical sessions. Included in Edipaq.
- PDF copies of course slides
- Laboratory notes
Such notes will be sold. Time and location will be specified later. The schedule of practical and repetition sessions will be posted on the Physics Institute notice boards (B5a).
- Exercise notes
Downloadable syllabus on Physics Department web site or sent with MyUlg.
- Mathematics notes
Included in Edipaq. |
Assessment methods and criteria :
| The modalities will be explained in an official faculty paper. |
Organizational remarks :
| Any absence in an interrogation, an exam or a laboratory session must be justified by medical certificate or official certificate of exceptional circumstances (a letter of the parents is not an official document) put back to the course or sent by mail to the secretariat of the professor.
Name, first name and dates of absences will clearly be indicated on the back of the certificate in block capitals.
The presence at the laboratories is mandatory. A presence paper sheet wil be signed at each session.
In the week following is come-back, the student should contact the logistics (Mrs C. Prosperi) to find a date to perform the laboratory. If no date is possible, the student will not be tested on the related subjects.
If the student do not participate to all laboratories, he will not be accepted at the practical exam. |
