PHYS0412-1  Biomedical physics, advanced seminar

Duration :  15h Th, 15h Pr
Number of credits :
Bachelor in biomedical sciences, 1st yearSecond semester4
Lecturer :  Maryse Hoebeke
Language(s) of instruction :
French language
Course contents :
...The course is aimed at students who, during their degree or their career, will have to work with medical imaging, an ever-evolving technology.
The application of physics in the area of medical instruments is spectacular. We have come a long way since Laennec invented the stethoscope in 1819 and Roentgen discovered X-rays in 1895! Radiography, scintigraphy, tomography, ultrasonography, thermography and, more recently, magnetic resonance imaging and positron emission tomography have revolutionized the diagnostic possibilities.
Learning outcomes of the course :
..The course aims to introduce in a simple but rigorous manner the physical concepts which are the basis of several medical imaging techniques. Students will be able to understand where the information is coming from, they will be aware of the limitations, possible artifacts and side-effects of the techniques. The course is divided in the following parts: Nuclear medicine imaging, X-ray imaging, endoscopy, thermography, magnetic resonance imaging, ultrasonography, signal processing, effects of ionizing radiations.
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :
General Physics
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
The course is given in Q2
Recommended or required readings :
Course Supports: course notes "Medical imagery, physical bases"by A. Seret and M. Hoebeke, University of Liège edition
Attention the previous syllabus is no more avalaible...
Assessment methods and criteria :
