Theme 2011-2012: Subjective experience: Phenomenological approaches to phenomenal consciousness.
- Argument: Phenomenology has historically developed as a theory of appearances, of subjective experience, contrasting with objectivity of the so-called "mundane" sciences. Brentano, Stumpf, Husserl and his heirs, yet Gestalt psychologists as well have faced a unique task: to describe phenomenal consciousness, and construct a theory of it. During the 20th century such a task seemed to be annihilated by various attacks coming from logical empiricism, behaviorism and naturalism. Yet, nowadays, this issue plays again a crucial role on the scene of the philosophy of mind. For approximatively thirty years it has been the topic of much-debated studies and has become, with Thomas Nagel, the main philosophical issue which challenges the predominant naturalistic view. The workshop will focus on the analysis of phenomenal consciousness by exploiting recent resources coming from the philosophy of mind, and by examining the possible contribution of Austrian-Germann phenomenology and French phenomenology. |
