Course contents :
In 2011-2012 the teaching will take the form of a list of readings and an individual report. Students are invited to get in touch with the Teacher.

The seminar is about the analysis of communication in real-life situations accroding to the model developped at the BTC in Palo Alto (Ca). Thanks to many exercices, students are introduced to the interactional approach and the conceptual toolkit developped by Watzlawick et al at the MRI in Palo Alto. The main theoretical references are the constructivist school and the complex system theories of E. Morin. The course is not overloaded with theory. It is devoted to the acquisition of "know-how" (to understand, to look, to interview) rather than theoretical knowledge.
Learning outcomes of the course :
1/ To be able to analyze a real-life communication situation without preconception or bias and to reframe it in a novel, interactional, manner.
2/ To learn how to conduct an interview and understand which questions lead to close or open answers.
3/ To learn to look at nonverbal behaviour
4/ To understand the implicit in verbal utterances.
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :
The course "Theories of Communication" is a prerequisite.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
There are exercices during the seminar. Additional exercices are planned in preparation for the conduct of an interview.
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
Weekly 2hours seminar during which theory and exercices are alternatively proposed.
Recommended or required readings :
Notes about constructivism and systemic theory are available for the first sessions. Later, students must take notes by themselves. A bibliographical list is also available.
Assessment methods and criteria :
The evaluation is made on the basis of an interview realized by the students. They will have to present the result of their interview on a written and an oral form. More precise instructions will be given in due time.
