Course contents :  
The lecture aims at introducing the fundamental concepts of hybrid electric and fuel cell powered vehicles.
Electrochemical devices
  • Basis of electrochemistry
  • General functioning of electrochemical systems (batteries and fuel cells)
  • Evaluation of the performance of electrochemical systems and identification of their limitations
  • Use of electrochemical systems in vehicles
  • Future development of batteries and fuel cells
Hybrid and fuel-cell powered vehicles
  • Introduction to hybrid electric vehicles HEV / architectures
  • Design principles of HEV
  • Energy storage systems (batteries, supercaps, fly wheels...)
  • Industrial aspects, HEV case studies
  • Fuel cells and FC powered vehicles
  • Regenerative braking and kinetic energy recovery systems (KERS)
Learning outcomes of the course :  
  • Knowledge of major concept, selection criteria and design principles of HEV, energy storage systems, and fuel cells in transport systems
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :  
  • Fundamentals in internal combustion engines, electric motors and electrochemistry
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :  
  • Lab works : Battery test bench and Fuel Cell test bench
  • Computer work

The lecture is given in English in one week from October 18 to 26, 2010 at the Campus Automobile in Spa-Francorchamps
