MECA0470-1  Alternative methods of modeling in continuum mechanics

Duration :  20h Th, 40h Pr
Number of credits :
Master in Aerospatial Engineering, research focus, 2nd yearToute l'année5
Master in Mechanical Engineering, in-depth approach, 2nd yearToute l'année5
Master in Engineering Physics, in-depth approach, 2nd yearToute l'année5
Lecturer :  Maarten Arnst, Eric Béchet, Ludovic Noels
Language(s) of instruction :
French language
Course contents :
This course has the puropose of presenting new numerical methods under development. Apart from the theoretical presentation of these methods, the goal pursued by these new developments, their state-of-the-art, and the future challenges are discussed. Among these methods, one can find
  • Meshless methods
  • Extended finite element methods (XFEM)
  • Discontinuous Galerkin methods
  • SPH
  • Homogenization
  • Etc
Learning outcomes of the course :
The student will be able to understand and to code a new numerical method from literature content.
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :
Advanced knowledge in

  • Solid mechanics
  • Fluid mechanics
  • Finite-element method
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
Study of a new numerical method, with as a basis, papers from the literature.
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
After some introductive lectures about new and old numerical methods, literature papers will be distributed to the students for them to study a new numerical method.
Assessment methods and criteria :
Evaluation is based on a project, which consists in the presentation and the implementation of one of the recently developed numerical methods. Literature papers will be the basis of this project.Participation to the presentation is mandatory.
