| MECA0450-2 | Renewable energies

| Duration : | 15h Th, 15h Pr |
| Number of credits : |
| Lecturer : | Pierre Dewallef, Vincent Lemort |
Language(s) of instruction :
| French language |
Course contents :
| The course introduces the concept of renewable energies and presents the potential of every branch. The study is done under the viewpoint of the 3E's: Energy (yield from conversion, power), Economy (production costs per kWh, investment required for kWh...), Environment (impacts on life cycle)
1) wind energy (performance and technology of various types of windmill equipment);
2) solar energy (photovoltaïc and thermal)
3) biomass;
4) hydraulics: waterfalls, pools, waves;
5) geothermal energy;
6) decarbonised hydrogen |
Learning outcomes of the course :
| Introduction to various types of conversion into electric power and/or into heat via renewable types of energy production using solar, hydroelectric, wind, geothermal. |
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :
| The course uses numerous concepts introduced in the frame of the course Thermal Power Stations and Cogeneration (MECA0037-1). The student should be familiar with energy conversion methods from fossil fuels in order to fully exploit this course.
This course also uses some concepts linked to electric energy transport (ELEC0014-3) and stability of electrical networks (ELEC0029-2). |
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
| The course is based on theory sessions (15h) and exercise sessions (15h).
- The general concepts related to each field will be exposed during theory sessions
- During the exercise sessions, the students are invited to apply the techniques exposed during theory sessions and will deal with the economical and technical design for different energy projects (photovoltaïc, biomass and wind,...)
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
| Face-to-face learning (4 hours classes a week at the 2nd semester) |
Recommended or required readings :
| Yes : slides + written notes |
Assessment methods and criteria :
| An oral test will be organized for the theory and a written test will be organized for the exercise.
The global assessment is obtained by weighting the assessment from the oral test (50%) and the written test (50%).
The second session exam consists in one unique test covering all topics. |
