MECA0444-1  Mechanical design

Duration :  30h Th, 30h Pr
Number of credits :
Bachelor in engineering sciences, civil engineer orientation (Bachelor in engineering sciences, civil engineer orientation), 3rd yearSecond semester5
Master in Mechanical Engineering, in-depth approach, 1st yearSecond semester5
Master en ingénieur civil mécanicien, à finalité spécialisée en technologies durables en automobiles, 1st yearSecond semester5
Master in Mechanical Engineering, specialized approach, 1st yearSecond semester5
Lecturer :  Jean‑François Debongnie
Language(s) of instruction :
French language
Course contents :
This course is a first introduction to mechanical design. It describes the great problems to be solved, which are classified in functionality problemes and liability problems.
CONTENTS
The design process.
Functionality : dimensional tolerances, geometric tolerances, hyperstaticity as related to geometric tolerances, roughness, stiffness exigencies, friction and its consequences, design for assembly and disassembly, reciprocal dependency between shapes and the fabrication process.
Liability : forces determination, preliminary plan of a shaft, general principles of liability, mechanical tests of materials, principles of the strength limit determination, hertzian contacts, rolling bearing computation.
Learning outcomes of the course :
After this course, the student will be aware of the main exigencies and difficulties of the mechanical design. He will be able to dimension a shaft and its supports.
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :
Prerequisites :Rational mechanics, elements of strength of materials.
Corequisites : there is a strong relation between this course and the other one, named Processus industriels de mise à forme. It constitutes also a basis for the course entitled Méthodes de fabrication en série.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
Oral course and exercises which are applications.
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
face-to-face course.
Recommended or required readings :
Text, ISBN - 13 : 9782960031331, and Reference manual, ISBN-13 : 978296003148 may be purchased at the AEES
Assessment methods and criteria :
Open book oral exam.
What is needed is a correct understanding and a capacity to apply the matter.
Organizational remarks :
Nothing
