  • Introduction (applications, thermal systems, different forms of energy, principles of thermodynamics and use of the EES software program)
  • Heat transfers (conduction, convection and radiation)
  • Thermodynamic variables and diagrams
  • State and changes for different technical fluids
  • First law of thermodynamics for closed systems, open systems and semi-open systems
  • Second law of thermodynamics (Carnot cycle, entropy and exergy)

  • Heat exchangers (principal types and thermohydraulic performance)
  • Engine cycles (gas cycles, steam cycles and combined cycles)
  • Reception cycles (refrigerating equipment and heat pumps)
  • Psychrometrics and air conditioning
Learning outcomes of the course :
Modes of heat transfer, laws of thermodynamics and applications to thermal systems and machines.
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :
CHIM0603 "Chimie", PHYS2020-1 "Physique 1" et PHYS2021-1 "Physique 2".
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
Supervised sessions for doing practical exercises will be provided, as well as exercises to be done at home. Three laboratory classes are planned (characteristics of thermal motors, heat pumps and condensation boilers).
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
The course consists in oral lectures illustrated every time I practical examples. Course does not meet during the second term. ECTS : 5
