Learning outcomes of the course :  
Pharmacology

To enable each student to :
  • Demonstrate techniques for obtaining a pain history
  • Differentiate somatic pain from nerve damage pain
  • Apply the World Health Organization approach to the management of cancer pain
  • Describe a corollary plan using appropriate non-pharmacologic techniques
  • Utilize the concepts of tolerance, physical dependence, and risk of addiction in their management of pain
  • Apply techniques for assessing, on a regular basis, the impact of their therapies on the patient's pain
  • Demonstrate skills in the use of alternate routes of administering analgesics when there is unacceptable pain relief with oral preparations
  • State the differences between acute and chronic pain and bedtween non-malignant chronic pain and cancer pain, both as physical entities and with respect to emotional overlay
