| MATH0008-2 | Introduction to probability and statistics

| Duration : | 15h Th, 15h Pr |
| Number of credits : |
| Lecturer : | Kristel Van Steen |
Language(s) of instruction :
| English language |
Course contents :
| I. Introduction to probability
- Conditional probability and independence
- Theoretical distributions: discrete random variables
- Theoretical distributions: continuous random variables
- Distributions of functions of random variables
II. Introduction to statistics
- Link between probability and statistics
- Data generation
- Data exploration
III. Statistical inference
PART 1: Parametric estimation
- Quality criteria of an estimator
- Methods of finding estimators
PART 2: Hypothesis testing
- Components of a test
- Test examples
- Selection of the appropriate test
IV. Relationships between two variables |
Learning outcomes of the course :
| The bases for being able to use probability and statistics correctly will be presented during the theoretical course. The interaction with the students will be stimulated by discussions around the concepts of sampling and its design, interpretation of the data using graphical tools, the formulation of hypothesis and execution of tests, ...
The main target of the practical course is to enable students to use probability and statistics to solve real-life problems, like those that they could be confronted to in their engineer career. Examples of bad use of statistics will also be analyzed. At the end of the course, students should ideally be able to solve any new problem, selecting the best appropriate solving technique themselves. |
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :
| Analysis courses given to Bachelors. |
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
| The practical courses take places before the theoretical courses (except the first week, where there is no practical course). The exercises done during the practical sessions are related to the theoretical course of the preceding week. |
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
| 15h of Theory lessons by the Professor (in English) + 15h of Practical works by Instructors (in French) in smaller groups for better follow-up - 1st semester |
Recommended or required readings :
- Reference for the theory (in french): SAPORTE G, "Probabilités et statistiques".
- Additional suggested book for the theory (in english): MOOD A, GRAYBILL F, BOES D, "Introduction to the theory of statistics"
- Exercice book available at the CDC de l'AEES (in french) containing all the exercises of the practical courses and some more to do home.
Assessment methods and criteria :
| Written examen
- 1h15: theory (closed-book): multiple choice test with confidence level
- 15 minutes BREAK
- 2h30: exercices (open-book): 4 exercises to solve
Graduation: theory 1/3 exercises 2/3 |
