Course contents :  
After a brief introduction to the current status of rhetoric and semiology in the area of the human sciences today, the course will concentrate on three or four questions that serve to mobilize the tools that belong to these two disciplines:
- the notion of "genre";
- the narrative function in the discourse of the press;
- strategies for creating and maintaining credibility in political discourse;
- other The material of the course can be altered in accordance with requests from participants, in view of the projects they intend to work on as part of their term papers.
Learning outcomes of the course :  
- To introduce students to research in the human sciences, particularly as concerns sciences of language; - to develop theoretical creativity; - to develop powers of analysis regarding cultural productions of today that are most frequently encountered in daily life (advertising, the press, etc.).
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :  
Students should have studied linguistics or semiotics in some form, prior to taking this course. The instructor will frequently refer to aspects of teaching points in semiotics or linguistics that he articulated during the first cycle.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :  
The course will at first consist in a series of lectures, and then the instructor will make assignments to students for seminar-type presentations.
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :  
Face-to-face only.
Recommended or required readings :  
Bibliographical information will be handed out in class.
Assessment methods and criteria :  
Marking is based on results of an oral examination, taking place during the regular exam session. The examination covers 1) encyclopaedic knowledge presented in lectures, 2) analytical ability, tested using a particular case, 3) oral defence of a written exposition, whose content, method and time for completion will be arranged in consultation with the instructor.
Participation by students in course activities will be taken into consideration in assigning marks.
