Course contents :

| 1. Relationship beween language and thought; between literal meaning and meaning in context.
2. Ambiguity and vagueness.
3. Analytical implication and presupposition.
4. Lexical semantics: different types of lexical units, semantic valence, semantic features, prototypes.
5. Introduction to sentence semantics (in particular in relation with syntax) and to formal semantics. |

Learning outcomes of the course :
|
| Knowledge of the basic notions of modern semantics and ability to apply them to solve precise problems. |

Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :
|
| In principle none. However, the course requires an analytic mind. It constitutes a normal continuation of a course in general linguistics and is a good preparation for students who intend to write a memoir in a domain requiring a semantic analysis. |
|
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
|
| Some exercises will be prepared at home and corrected in class.
Master students who take the course in a "finalité approfondie" will have additional texts to read (including texts in English). |

| Lecture notes for part of the course. Chapters of various books will have to be read; in particular: Anna Wierzbicka: Semantics - Primes and Universals. |

| Written examination (as a rule, the aim of the questions is to check the student's understanding and ability to apply).
