Course contents :  
This course aims to provide an overview of one of the most widely celebrated writing traditions in Africa: Anglophone Nigerian literature. After an introduction to the history of Nigeria and a short discussion of the debates that have animated the country's literary scene, the course will consist in close readings of selected texts. Sessions will be organized along three broad thematic lines: the British colonization of Nigeria and the contemporary legacy of colonialism; the literary representation of the Nigerian Civil War (1967-1970); and immigration to Europe (including Belgium) and the United States.
Learning outcomes of the course :  
Upon completion of the course, students are expected to be able to discuss the key thematic and formal features of Anglophone Nigerian literature, and use the theoretical knowledge acquired during the course to develop an original analysis of the texts studied in class.
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :  
Good knowledge of English.

Face-to-face seminars.
Recommended or required readings :  
Students are asked to read the following novels:
Chinua Achebe, Things Fall Apart, 1958 (edition used in class: Penguin Modern Classics, 2010)
Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Half of a Yellow Sun, 2006 (edition used in class: Harper Perennial, 2007)
Chika Unigwe, On Black Sisters' Street, 2009 (edition used in class: Vintage, 2010)
Any other material used during the course (videos, essays, short stories) will be made available to the students.
Assessment methods and criteria :  
A written essay and an oral exam.
