Course contents :  
This course aims at developing and strengthening communication skills in both everyday and business contexts.

CEFRL levels of the course : Listening C1 Reading C1 Speaking C1 Lecturing C1 Writing C1

Course contents: explanation and discussion of recent articles/audio or video documents on socio-economic, financial, (inter-)cultural or political topics.
Learning outcomes of the course :  
Strenghening communication practice in everyday Dutch.
Mastery of business Dutch in situations requiring oral communication (listening comprehension; speaking) and written communication (reading comprehension, writing letters and documents)
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :  
B2/C1 level of the CEFRL Mastery of everyday Dutch and good knowledge of "technical" vocabulary.
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :  
2 hours spread over 12 weeks. The course is mainly organized as a seminar (there are about 30 students in a group) implying the active participation of students. Students will be asked to prepare (in advance) the exercises and documents on which the course is based.

  • oral exercises: debates, presentations, role-plays, conversation clubs.
  • writing exercises: reports, letters or a CV, summary of lectures, interviews.
  • listening comprehension exercises.
  • exercises aiming at developing the acquisition of "technical" vocabulary.
Student work is shared out as following: 3 credit course (3 times 24 h = 72h): class attendance: 24 h reading, preparation of the exercises and lecture: 48 h

Assessment methods and criteria :  
3 credit course (L2 Dutch - common curriculum):
  • listening comprehension (25% of the global mark)
  • written exam (25 %): vocabulary and contents of the multimedia files
  • oral exam (50%): oral presentation of a social, economic or political topic + roleplay
All tests are compulsory. If the student doesn't present one of the three tests, he obtains 0/20 as a global mark.
Criteria for evaluation: Listening comprehension test: capacity to understand and formulate the main ideas of a broadcast. Written tests: knowledge of the specific vocabulary and the grammatical structures; accurate language; quality of the contents Oral test: accuracy and fluency; quality of the contents; capacity to defend one's point of view
