Course contents :

| This course is based on the study of the language and vocabulary specific to sociology and human sciences as well as on academic skills such as note-taking, summarizing, paraphrasing and presenting content.
The CEFRL objective level of the course is C1 in all four language skills. |

Learning outcomes of the course :
 |
| As this is a C1-level course, at the end of the year, we would expect our students to be able to :
- understand extended speech, even when it is not clearly structured and when relationships are only implied and not signalled explicitly.
- understand long and complex factual and literary texts and specialized articles.
- express themselves fluently and spontaneously without much obvious searching for expressions.
- use language flexibly and effectively for professional purposes.
- formulate ideas and opinions with precision.
- present clear, detailed descriptions of complex subjects, developing particular points and rounding off with an appropriate conclusion.
- express themselves in clear, well-structured texts, expressing points of view at some length.

Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :

| This is an upper-intermediate to advanced level course (CEFRL C1). The level required to take this course is intermediate to upper-intermediate (CEFRL B2), which corresponds to the level of the Level-2 English course (LANG0003). |

Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
 |
| This class uses a dynamic, interactive, and effective approach to learning sociological English and is based on texts from Sociology: A Global Introduction by Macionis and Plummer.
During the class a variety of activities enable the presentation, practice and application of the language material from the book. |

Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
 |
| The class is taught for three hours every week in the first semester.
Attendance, preparation and participation in class are essential. |

Recommended or required readings :
 |
| Students will need a copy of the fifth edition of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association and a copy of the third edition of J. Macionis and K. Plummer's Sociology: a Global Introduction.
There will be a book sale in September for the students who wish to buy the books at a discount. Details will be given in class the first week of term.
This term's class will focus mainly on Chapters 8, 11, 12, 18, 19 and 20 from Macionis and Plummer's book. |

Assessment methods and criteria :

| FIRST SESSION
1. Continuous assessment: 2/20
- Students will have to write two essays in class during the term.
2.Final examination in January (in two parts): 18/20
- Oral exam about two chapters from the course book, namely Chapter 21 "Health, Medicine and Well-being" or Chapter 11 "Racism, ethnicities and Migration" and another chapter chosen by the student himself or herself. Students can choose any chapter that has never been studied in class or for the exam either in the second or third year, which excludes chapters 5 and 22, but not only. (9/20)
- Written exam based on the topics and all the language material dealt with in class. (9/20)
SECOND SESSION
- Oral exam about two chapters from the course book, namely Chapter 21 "Health, Medicine and Well-being" or Chapter 11 "Racism, ethnicities and Migration" and another chapter chosen by the student himself or herself. Students can choose any chapter that has never been studied in class or for the exam either in the second or third year, which excludes chapters 5 and 22, but not only. (10/20)
