Course contents :  
This course is a "survival kit" for the manager in the IT war : what must he know to take part efficiently in IT projects if he's no computer scientist ? It will attempt to answer these questions :
  • What's an information system (IS), a computer system, a business process ?
  • Why integrate IS ?
  • How can we represent (model) IS from a dynamical point of view ?
  • How is it possible to implement or maintain an IS : in-house development, standard packages, ERP, ... ?
  • What's a system development cycle ? How can we manage an IT project (plans, budgets, quality) ?
  • How do we evaluate the return on investment of an IS ?

Learning outcomes of the course :  
At the end of this course, students will be able to
  • Define the concepts of information systems, business process, ERP, development life cycle
  • Understand an array of current and important information technologies
  • Draw business process models specifying their conceptual and functional aspects, by using a simplified BPMN 2.0 notation
  • Understand the stakes of ERPs
  • Evaluate the potential an ERP solution to manage a small or medium enterprise
  • Identify situations where a methodical and phased approach is indispensable in an IT project
  • Contribute, as a knowledgeable user or manager, to the development of an information system, mainly in the analysis and test phases
  • Evaluate the profitability of an information system
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :  
Usage of a computer and standard software (OS, browser, office suite), essential principles of information technology, programming and databases. These prerequisites are taught in mandatory courses « Maîtrise de l'outil informatique » et INFO0074-1 « Informatique en sciences économiques et de gestion : partim II »
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :  
Activities :
  • Theoretical courses : short lectures about concepts, techniques and set tools. Traditional course in class room; individual work [1,5 ECTS]
  • Case studies corresponding to the reality of a small organization. Start-up and debriefing of exercises in class; groups work between classes [1 ECTS]
  • Exercises : discovery of a software modelling tool, a standard software package and an ERP. Monitored work in computer labs [0,5 ECTS]
  • Conference : presentations by business practitioners and domain specialists [0,5 ECTS]
  • Final project : set case, based on an existing enterprise, demanding the application of acquired competences and proposed by the professors. Completely autonomous group project. A written analysis report is handed out and presented during the simulation of a decision meeting at the end of preliminary analysis [1,5 ECTS]

Assessment methods and criteria :  
June :
  • Theory : individual written examination (MCQ) [30 %]
  • Final project : group oral examination [50 %]
  • Other activities : evaluation based on a portfolio (solutions of case studies and exercises) [20 %]
September :
  • Oral examination on all aspects of the course and the final project
