Course contents :
As opposed to the introductory course, this course requires students' active participation, as they will be asked to read various articles, and to draft, present and discuss reading notes. The course consists of three parts. The first part is an introduction to certain social sciences, in particular sociology. The presentation of the key concepts of different theories is followed by reading articles from historians who use these concepts in their research. As an extension of the first part, the question of categories and scales of analysis in social history will be addressed, from the approach to social classes studied in a regional framework to the different forms of biographical monitoring, from national comparatism to trans-national approaches. The third part of the course presents the renewal of research themes both in the field of social history and economic history, over the last two decades. Finally, in 2011-2012, groups of students will be asked to present research surveys on different economic crisis.
Learning outcomes of the course :
By the end of the course, students will be able to research recent historical literature on defined questions of economic and social history, to discuss them in front of an audience and finally to integrate them into their own research.
