GERE0003-2  Theory of structural calculations, 1st part

Duration :  36h Th
Number of credits :
Master in Environmental Bioengineering, Professional Focus, 1st yearFirst semester3
Lecturer :  Pierre Latteur
Language(s) of instruction :
French language
Course contents :
This course includes : calculation of the degree of redundancy of a structure, solving of hyperstatic structures (method of forces), thermal actions, supports movements, elastic supports, trusses, curved structural elements, funicular arches, non funicular arches, influence lines, notions about the dynamics of structures, finite elements and global buckling.
Learning outcomes of the course :
This course is a continuity of the course of Strength of Materials and Elasticity INGE0001 and aims to achieve the student's knowledge in the field of Structural Engineering.
After completing this course the student is expected to be able to calculate and better understand the flows of forces in the isostatic and hyperstatic structures, to solve any 2D hyperstatic structure and to design simple buildings as footbridges, frames, suspended structures, arches, etc
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :
INGE0001 : Strenght of materials and elasticity
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
All the forecast hours are hold by the professor himself in auditorium. Generally, each course takes place as following:
- Short remind of the previous courses - Exercises solved and commented on the blackboard by the professor and discussed with the students - 10 minutes break - Continuation of the theory with the help of a Powerpoint slide show
The course is composed of ex cathedra courses with exercises based on practical or existing structures. The exercises are accompanied by the use of one or several softwares
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
Lectures : 12h Practical Works : 24h
Recommended or required readings :
"Calculer une structure, de la théorie à l'exemple", Editions Aademia Buylant, Louvain-la-Neuve, ISBN 2-87209-843-7, Pierre Latteur, 488 pages. (http://www.issd.be/Lelivre.php (http://www.issd.be/lelivre.php))
Assessment methods and criteria :
Written examination which includes a part of theory with books closed (25% of the points) and a part of exercises with books opened (75% of the points).
