Language(s) of instruction :
French language
Course contents :
1. Genetic aspects of evolution (C. Remacle) (6 h + 6 h Pr)
  • Genetic factors of evolution (mutation, migration, selection, genetic drift)
  • Mechanisms contributing to speciation (species definition, pre- and postzygotic barriers; types of speciation (sympatric, allopatric)
2. Probabilistic phylogenetic methods (D. Baurain) (7 h + 7 h Pr)
  • Phylogenetic inference by Maximum Likelihood
  • Bayesian phylogenetic inference
  • Models of sequence evolution
  • Model comparison and selection
  • Phylogenetic robustness and topology comparison
  • Model violations and phylogenetic artifacts
  • Modeling the heterogeneity of the substitution process
3. Genetic diversity of species and applications (J. Michaux) (7 h +7 h Pr)
  • Phylogeography
  • Population genetics
  • Genetics of conservation
Learning outcomes of the course :
Fundamentals of population genetics and evolution, in particular at the molecular level, as well as modern phylogenetic approaches.
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :
Elements of biology, biochemistry, genetics and phylogenetics of the Bac level.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
Practical courses on bioinformatic applications of molecular evolution and on resolution of problems of population genetics
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
First quadrimester course taking usually place in one of the lecture rooms of the Botanical Institute in Sart Tilman (B.22). The sequence of the course is that of the general presentation.
Recommended or required readings :
Notes and PowerPoint slides for Cl. Remacle. PowerPoint slides and review articles for D. Baurain.
Assessment methods and criteria :
Written examination (one question for partim 1 and two questions for partims 2 and 3). The examination is successful if the note is 10 and no partim is less than 8/20.
