Course contents :
|
| This course describes a series of natural hazard to which building structures can be subjected. It explains their effects on buildings and the way these structures could be designed in order to offer a satisfactory behaviour and achieve safety to the persons.
The following items are treated successively: earthquakes, flooding, fires, landslides, wind, tornadoes, impact, explosion.
A stress is put on seismic design and fire design. The concept of structural robustness seen as the first line of defence against exceptional actions is introduced.
The class covers not only the design concepts, but also the details related to the application of design rules. |

Learning outcomes of the course :
|
| At the end of this class, the student will able to design a building that will behave correctly against accidental actions. He/She will know the different strategies that lead to a sane structural behaviour in case of major hasard.
The lecture develops critical thinking skills and creativity with regards to the unusual load paths that have to be imagined. |

Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :

| Good understanding of strength of materials and of structural mechanics. |

Planned learning activities and teaching methods :

| Some simple exercices, either demonstrated to the students or to be done by them, about eartquakes and fire. |

Assessment methods and criteria :

| Oral Examination.
