GCIV2030-2  Structural Design of Buildings

Duration :  15h Th, 30h Pr
Number of credits :
Bachelor in engineering sciences, civil engineer orientation (Bachelor in engineering sciences, civil engineer orientation), 2nd yearSecond semester5
Master of science in architecture and engineering, in-depth approach, 1st yearSecond semester4
Master of science in architecture and engineering, specialized approach, 1st yearSecond semester4
Lecturer :  Thibaut Brogneaux, Jean‑Claude Cornesse
Language(s) of instruction :
French language
Course contents :
  • Brief introduction to static forces (graphical approach), resistance and behaviour of materials.
  • Presentation of the functioning of standard structural elements.
  • Systemic analysis of the building and its structural system, regarding constraints imposed on the project (functionality, symbolic, aesthetic, etc.).
  • Analysis of cases.
Learning outcomes of the course :
  • Thanks to an approach as direct and intuitive as possible, students get the tools so as to understand and grasp the impact of the structural system on the architecture of a building.
  • The students acquire further technical and scientific device ton confirm the intuitive approach.
At the end of this course, the students will be able to design future projects taking into account the structural requirements as early as possible in the design process.
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :
None
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
Short exercises done in class, in groups or individually.
Analytical work of an existing building and composition work on various topics related to the building or theoretical views we had in class.
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
Face-to-face. Slideshow during ex cathedra class, along with some documentation if necessary.
Assessment methods and criteria :
Evaluation of work done during the practice sessions.
Individual evaluation at the end of the year (oral examination with written preparation).
