GCIV0623-1  Experimental geotechnics

Duration :  10h Th, 20h Pr
Number of credits :
Bachelor in engineering sciences, civil engineer orientation (Bachelor in engineering sciences, civil engineer orientation), 3rd yearToute l'année3
Lecturer :  Frédéric Collin, Séverine Levasseur
Language(s) of instruction :
French language
Course contents :
This course will introduce concepts and notions related to (in situ and laboratory) experiments on soft soils
In the theoretical part, the following aspects will be covered:
  • Drilling techniques
  • In situ testing (cone penetration test, pressuremetre test)
  • Laboratory testing (measurement devices, triaxial test, oedometre test)
In addition to the theoretical lectures, laboratories will help the students to better understand the theoretical notions and associated concepts.
Learning outcomes of the course :
At the end of the course, students will be able to:
  • Understand and analyse the in situ and laboratory experimental results.
  • Carry out the main laboratory tests in soil mechanics.
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :
GCIV0603-1: Géotechnique et Infrastructure MECA0001-1: Mécanique des Matériaux
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
The course is composed of "ex-cathedra" lectures (10 hours) and laboratories (20 hours).
"Ex-cathedra" lectures deal with the different soil experiments (in-situ and laboratory test).
Laboratory sessions (with 2 or 3 students per group) allow the students validating a material for its use, which will be defined in the project description.
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
Face-to-face
Recommended or required readings :
Available to students, Acrobat files.
Assessment methods and criteria :
Each lesson and laboratory practices are mandatory.
Students will be evaluated based on the laboratory reports (weight 40%). A oral exam will be organized in June (without access to any course materials) on the theoretical part of the course (weight 60%).
In case of second session (September), the grade obtained for the laboratory reports will be kept and the theoretical part will be only evaluated.
Organizational remarks :
The course will be given on Thursday afternoon during the second quadrimestre.
Each lesson (4 hours) will be divided into a theoretical lesson ("ex-cathedra") and laboratory session.
