Course contents :

| The aim of this course is to present students for the first time with a realistic construction project, in this case building design.
The student acts as an engineer in a design company which has been requested by a client (here the course co-ordinator) to design a building, and given a set of objectives to be met.
For example, the student is told the piece of land which is available, the surface area which the building must have, perhaps also the number of floors, its use and a few other functional requirements.
It is then up to the engineer to satisfy the client's requirements as best as possible, while respecting safety and functional obligations.
The aim is to be able to cover aspects of geotechnics, hydrology, materials, structures, ... in a single project. Integrating these different subjects and demonstrating how they interact with one another is one of the fundamental aims of this integrated project. |

Learning outcomes of the course :
 |
| At the end of the course, the student will be able to design a building with a simple structure, to determine the effects of actions in this structure and to determine the sizes of the elements. He will be able to choose their location of the building on a given piece of land taking into account its topography.
He will be able to analyse the foundation soil, to determine the efforts on the foundations, to analyse the stability of slopes and, if retaining walls have to be used, to determine the loads supported by these walls.
Il will also be able to consider the evacuation of rain water, on the roof of the building and on the ground. He will be able to pre-design a sprinkler system. |

Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
 |
| During the course, the students will work, in small groups, on the project that will be given to them, with the help of the professor and of the assistants.
It is expected that, between the courses, the students will gather information required to continue the project and will gather their main results in a written report.
They will then present their report orally. |

| This course is given face-to-face.
For practical reasons, the integrated project will take place over the whole year and is structured into two phases.
Phase 1: structural aspects
Weeks 1-7 in the first quarter, on Thursday afternoon from 1:30 PM to 5:30 PM.
Subjects covered include: overall building design; definition of loads (wind, snow,...including weighting co-efficients); idealisation of the chosen structure (idealisation of foundations connections, the static system, loads, ...); choice of materials; downward load distribution; determining stress on the foundations; pre-dimensioning and verification of structural elements; overall reflection on the problem of waste, slopes, access roads, foundations, diverting stream waters and underground water.
Phase 2: Hydraulic and geotechnical aspects
Weeks 1-14 in the second quarter on Tuesday mornings from 1030 to 1230
Subjects covered included:
In hydraulics:
problems of underground water and calculation the flow field and table water; evaluation of quantities and design of draining devices for rain water collected by roofs, road surfaces and parking ; design of networks for fire protection.
In geotechnics:
The analysis of foundation soils;
Determining stress (vertical, horizontal and the effect of wind) on foundations; designing and dimensioning the foundations; excavation; slope stability; design and dimensioning of retaining walls; using Eurocode 7 for safety.
Comments:
During Phase 2, there will also be a return to phase 1 insofar as the results of the geotechnical and hydraulic studies may mean that structural adjustments are required (dimensioning and/or design).
Knowledge acquired during the first quarter classes will be applied to the Phase 2 project. The hours given above are merely indicative, given that personal work is important in such a project.

| Individual grades given for the oral presentations
Team grades given for reports
Individual grades given for the end of year oral examination.
Examination methods
The exam at the end of the year consists of a presentation summarising the project. It does not mean re-doing the oral presentations given during the year, but means developing an overall view of the project, focusing on the interactions between the different aspects dealt with over the course of the whole project.
Every team will jointly make the presentation. Following the presentation, individual questions will be asked of each member of the team.
This presentation will be made before a jury made up of teaching staff from the building department and practising engineers. |
