Course contents :  
Introduction to wood technology Transformation technics in relation to forest resources and economical background Description of various technologies : - Slicing and Peeling - Plywood - Pulp and paper - Sawing - Drying - Wood frames - Flooring Wood energy (Densification, Gazification, Charcoal)
Learning outcomes of the course :  
To provide a well-argued knowledge of the various wood transformation technologies taking into account the global market changes
After completing the course the student is expected to
Analyse the potential of development of primary wood processing units taking into account available resources and economic environment
Point out strength and weakness of a wood industry
Compare various technologies available for log processing, solid wood drying and wood building
Assess the relevance of various ways to produce energy from wood residues
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :  
Basic knowledge in wood science
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :  
Short introduction of wood technologies and processes.Preparation of plants visits Visit of various plants : softwood sawmill, hardwood sawmill, carpentry, laminated wood plant A personal written report on a specific issue and a visited wood industry will be requested

Lectures : 10h Visits of plants : 14h

Written personal report (50%) and oral examination (50%) Joint evaluation with "Wood-based products" (single examination)

Visit of wood industries is mandatoryBoth lectures "Wood industry" and "Wood-based products" are organised jointly
