Course contents :  
This course covers the major roles played by microorganisms in the environment, the consequences of their activites and some practical applications.

The course comprises three modules:

1. Diversity, nutrition and growth of microorganisms

2. Soil microbiology and microbiology of bioremediation

3. Aquatic microbiology and sanitary risks

The understanding of theoretical concepts is favoured by the integration of lectures with case studies, practicals (laboratory) and guided personal work, treating real situations.
Learning outcomes of the course :  
- Acquiring basic knowledge on the diversity, metabolism and growth of microorganisms; the physico-chemical environment of the soil; the role of microorganisms in the degradation of organic matter; the application of microbial activites in the biological treatment of soils; sanitary risks of microbial growth.

- Understanding microbial processes in various environments

- Application of microbiological principles in applied processes

- Realise the importance and complexity of microbial processes in the environment and associated sanitary risks

- Acquiring sufficiant knowledge for the development of critical thinking when facing environmental problems

- Acquiring analytical technical and expertise skills for caracterising and evaluating the microbiological aspects in environmental studies
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :  
Basic/detailed notions in microbiology, chemistry, biochemistry and ecology are useful, but not essential.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :  
Case studies and practicals (laboratory) will be organised
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :  
Lectures are given in the second 'quadrimestre'; the timetable will be available at the beginning of the academic year.
