Learning outcomes of the course :  
Introduction to GIS as a tool for spatial data capture, management and analysis in the context of environment and natural resources management. An important part of the course is dedicated to practical exercises, which allow students to discover a desktop GIS software. A short introduction to Open source software is also given.
After completing the course the student is expected to be able to :
- deal with the basic concepts of geographic information systems (vectror and raster data model, georeferrencing, projection, topology, digitizing, goeprocessing, ...);
- handle the main functions of a desktopGIS software (data visualisation, data selection, layer symbolisation, geoprocessing, layout preparation);
- find and set up GIS resources (data, tools) on the web.
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :  
Basic knowledge of statistics and computer (Windows operating system, Excel spreadsheet)
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :  
The practical exercises are transmitted to the students through MyULG.
