Course contents :
| This 2 credit course is given by Jean-Jacques Boreux (1 credit) and Jacques Nicolas (1 credit).
Overview of part of Jean-Jacques Boreux:
In the circumstances specified by the theorem of Buckingham (1914), dimensional analysis can reveal some laws of physics. For example we establish a relationship between the mass of a flying object and its cruising speed. This relationship applies as much to a Dragonfly for a Boeing 747. Thus, without being engineer in aeronautics, knowledge of the basic units of physics combined with a little common sense and a few basics of calculation give us a fundamental law of fly. It is this kind of training that must be submitted his thinking to make progress in the field of science.
Overview of part of Jacques Nicolas:
- Quick review of essential mathematical concepts (derived, ultimate, divergence, gradient, etc).
- Revision of the basics of Physics (force, pressure, power and energy) in relation to environmental problems.
- Principles of conservation (mass, momentum, energy, continuity equation).
- Electricity and magnetism.
- Waves.

Learning outcomes of the course :
| The purpose of this course of upgrade in physics is to remind the students the bases of the scientific steps of the physicists from the statement of an assumption to the formulation of a law. The aim is not to give a complete lecture in physics, but to help the student to think about the application of major physical laws in an environmental context. |
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :
| Basic facts of physics and mathematics (secondary education level). |
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
| Various exercises are solved during the course, other ones are proposed for a personal work at home. The student may consult solutions. |
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
| The lecture is given in modules covering each a half-day of 4 hours (1 credit=3 half-days), in an independent way for each lecturer, but within a condensed time period. |
Recommended or required readings :
| Lecture notes are available. For the part of Jacques Nicolas, the "power point" version can be downloaded on official ULg web site, as well as exercises and solutions. |
Assessment methods and criteria :
| Without any support, the student must be able to answer theoretical questions and to solve problems similar to those proposed during lecture. A single written exam is organised for both parts of the course. |
