Course contents :
This course is focused on the application of the generic methods known from the processing of primary mineral resources in the areas of secondary resources treatment and decontamination of polluted soils. The course begins with an introduction about the specific separation techniques developed for the treatment of solid wastes as well as the principle waste streams. The valorisation options (material and energy) for the products recovered/separated from the solid wastes and the by-products will be discussed. The principal sources and types of soil pollutants will be presented and the basic ex-situ techniques for soil decontamination reviewed.
Learning outcomes of the course :
By attending this cours the students will be able to
- get themselves familiarised with the techniques originally developed for the treatment of mineral materials and subsequently adapted by the recycling industry,
- get acquaint with the contemporary principles in elaboration of flowsheets for treatment of solid wastes and decontamination of soils
- understand the possibilities and the limitations for the various techniques used nowadays in processing solid wastes and treatment of polluted soils.
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :
A knowledge in basic chemical processes is desirable.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
The cours is based upon lectures given at the campus of Arlon. Lab experiments will be organised at Arlon campus if possible. The students are supposed to present as well a resume with findings from individual literature research - several topcis will be offered for teh students to chose from. The cours is organised jointly with Prof. M. Crine.
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
Face-to-face (Arlon campus)
