Lecturer :  Philippe Andre, Jacques Nicolas
Coordinator :  Jacques Nicolas
Language(s) of instruction :
French language
Course contents :
The lecture presents the different steps of data collection and processing for environmental studies, including the system analysis approach.
It includes 2 chapters given by different lecturers:
Chapter 1: Data collection (Jacques Nicolas-1credit) -fundamental notions of measurement, scales and units, uncertainties, graphical data processing.
Chapter 2: System analysis (Philippe André-1 credit) -initiation to the system analysis techniques and its application to environmental problems.
Learning outcomes of the course :
Chapter 1: To provide basic features allowing data collection in the environment, coping with field requirements and measurement uncertainties.
Chapter 2 : To initiate the student to the language and the tools of system analysis. To demonstrate the application of the concepts on different examples dealing with environmental issues.
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :
Fundamentals of mathematics
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
Chapter 1 : The course tackles various practical case studies.
Chapter 2 : 6h in alternance with the theoretical course
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
The lecture is given in modules covering each a half-day of 4 hours (1 credit=3 half-days), in an independent way for each lecturer, but within a condensed time period in theory-practice alternance.
Recommended or required readings :
Chapter 1: On-line "Power-point" version available + référence book Nicolas, J. 1998 Surveillance de l'Environnement-Méthodologie-Bruylant-Academia
Chapitre 2 : Copy of the slides available; course notes in preparation.
Assessment methods and criteria :
Closed-book written exam, only 1 exam for the 2 chapters. Questions are based upon practical examples to try students in real-life situation.
