| Course description :
This course is an introduction to acoustics and lighting techniques for master students (architect and building engineers). The basic principles of acoustical engineering are presented and explained. It is shown how to evaluate discomfort and annoyance, in particular through the environmental regulations, some room acoustics matters are presented.
The introduction to lighting techniques begins with the basic principles of photometry, then the different lamps and their applications are compared. Finally, some matters regarding public lighting and interior lighting are presented.
The course can be completed by ELEN-0443 (Building acoustics and lighting).

Learning outcomes of the course :
 |
| At the end of the course, it is intended that the student will be able to:
- understand the basics of sound propagation and its different modes,
- evaluate and measure sound levels in decibels and combine the contribution of several sound sources,
- understand the basics of psychoacoustics and the origin of the dBA,
- understand and apply some noise indicators describing discomfort, in particular equivalent noise levels,
- apply the method of expertise ISO 1996 and the environmental noise regulation used in Wallonia,
- understand the typical phenomena in outdoor sound propagation,
- compute the attenuation of noise barriers in simple situations,
- calculate and measure reverberation times according to Sabine,
- determine the quantity of absorption in a room to reach a given reverberation time,
and propose solutions,
- understand and apply the basic photometric quantities used in lighting techniques,
- understand recommendations, technical documentations or standards published in the lighting techniques literature,
- apply the basic laws of photometry (for example to calculate the illuminance in simple situations),
- identify the different types of lamps, their properties and applications,
- calculate an interior lighting installation in a simple situation. |

| Basic mathematics and physics for engineering studies. |

Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
 |
| First of all, this course is organised in modules, each of them consisting in a general presentation ex cathedra, followed by applications and exercices with the teacher. Sometimes, these exercices are included in the general presentation.
Some labo demonstration can be organised, if possible.
It is recommended that the students actively participate to the general presentation by answering questions and formulate critics. Also during the exercices, the students must be equipped with a calculator.
It is also recommended to read and understand the theory and exercices of the previous lesson before assisting to the next one. Additional exercices will also be proposed: it is strongly recommended that the students try to solve them by themselves and ask the teacher to evaluate their solution. |

Assessment methods and criteria :
 |
| The evaluation is first based on an oral examination during which the student will answer to questions concerning the theoretical matters that have been exposed during the presentations ex-cathedra. He/she will also solve one or two exercises (bringing a calculator is essential).
All books and notes can be consulted for the solution of exercices, except if otherwise stated. |
