Lecturer :  Marc Van Droogenbroeck
Language(s) of instruction :
French language
Course contents :
Table of contents: introduction, signals and telecommunications systems, continuous wave modulation, random variables, stochastic processes and noise, propagation and radio systems, introduction to digitization, digital baseband transmission, digital modulation, main principles of GSM networks, detection/error codes
Learning outcomes of the course :
At the end of the course, students will be able to:
  • understand and exploit the theoretical and practical considerations involved in telecommunications;
  • explain the origin of the major limitations of transmission systems;
  • describe and model a signal that is transmitted in a communication channel;
  • understand some large telecommunications systems.
In addition, exercises sessions will help students to integrate theoretical concepts and to apply them.
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :
None
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
The course is based on "ex-cathedra" lectures (30 hours) and practical courses (30 hours). The "ex-cathedra" lectures describe in detail the basic theoretical concepts involved in telecommunications systems. The practical courses involve exercise sessions.
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
Face-to-face.
Recommended or required readings :
A full paper version of the lecture notes is available and can be bought at the AEES. It is also possible to download the slides (shown during the course) on the web site :
http://www.ulg.ac.be/telecom/teaching/notes/
An up-to-date HTML version of the lecture notes is also available on this web site.
Assessment methods and criteria :
Written examination comprising theoretical and practical questions
Organizational remarks :
