| Description of the course:
This course introduces the essential concepts for creating electronic control systems. It covers power electronics, the design of magnetic elements such as solenoids and transformers, as well as control and measurement.
The electronic circuits which are studied are in particular used in the following applications: powering portable systems such as cell phones or laptop computers, maximising the recuperation of energy produced by photovoltaic cells, powering electric motors using variable frequency, etc.
The practical work consists in creating a DC supply with an imposed tension or an AC supply with imposed tension and imposed frequency. The projects, carried out in small groups, cover all the stages of designing a real system: pre-dimensioning and modelling, practical construction and testing.

Converter topologies: Buck, Boost, BuckBoost, Forward, Flyback, Fullbridge, Push-pull.
Design of magnetic components: inductances and transformers.
Static and dynamic models: continuous, discontinuous and boundary conduction modes.
Snubbers and soft-switching; Current programmed mode; Power factor correction.
Controller design.
Reliability: MTBF, redundancy, expected life. |

Learning outcomes of the course :

| By designing, building and testing an actual electronic converter, the students will have learned the basics of power electronics and applied various concepts of control theory. They will also have been confronted with the management of a complex, multi-phase project with different task leaders. |
