Course contents :
The course on contemporary documentaries (cinema, video, television) concentrates exclusively on the analysis of contemporary documentary films (in the 1990s and 2000s), focussing on works which offer an original approach to history and contemporary society. Through these films, students will learn to discover and question the latest theoretical advances in the field of theory and the analysis of documentary cinema. Taking account of the evolution of the contemporary audiovisual landscape, the course also devotes two or three sessions to the specific analysis of documentaries produced and directed exclusively for television.
Learning outcomes of the course :
Based on specific contemporary methodologies of contemporary documentary cinema analysis, the course also focuses on the clear distinction between criticism and analysis, two modes of discourse which are often confused in students' understanding.
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :
Passive knowledge of English.
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
See http://cipl82.philo.ulg.ac.be/horaires

The course in contemporary documentaries will be given in the second term, on Mondays between 2pm-5pm.
Recommended or required readings :
At the start of the course, students will receive a course file containing the session programme, a selective filmography, a selective bibliography and a reading portfolio.
Assessment methods and criteria :
Students will be required to carry out a piece of written work and undertake an oral examination. Students will draft a document comprising seven texts of two pages relating to a film seen during the course. Each text addresses a specific question for each film envisaged. Students will choose the seven films from those seen during the course.
The oral exam will cover the reading portfolio as well as all the material covered in class (presentations + films).
