CHIM9260-1  Properties and applications of surfactants

Duration :  15h Th
Number of credits :
Master in Chemical Sciences, in-depth approach, 2nd yearSecond semester2
Master in Chemical Sciences, didactic approach, 2nd yearSecond semester2
Master in Chemical Sciences, specialized approach, 2nd yearSecond semester2
Lecturer :  Guy Broze, Antoine Debuigne
Language(s) of instruction :
French language
Course contents :
Surface active agents are present in numerous formulated products and used in the production process of many materials. This course aims to provide a comprehensive approach on general principles of surface-active agents physical chemistry and their formulation in finished products. The main families of surface-active agents will be presented (12h). Finally, the use of surfactants for the polymerization process in aqueous dispersed media will be discussed (3h).
Learning outcomes of the course :
This course aims to make students familiar with the surface-active compounds currently used in industry and to provide them with the underlying basic physico-chemical principles.
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :
Basic knowledge of chemistry.
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
Six lessons (2h each) will be devoted to the presentation of the main categories of surface-active agents. One lesson (3h) will describe the use of surfactants for the polymerization in aqueous dispersed media.
Recommended or required readings :
A copy of the slides (in French and/or in English) will be furnished to the students.
Assessment methods and criteria :
Written exam.
Organizational remarks :
The course will start in February (2h/week)
