Course contents :
|
| Complete student training in the use of separation methods: gas chromatography and high-performance liquid chromatography.
Provide students with the knowledge needed to use the following methods and basic knowledge: Infra-red and Raman spectroscopy, molecular fluorescence spectroscopy, atomic absorption and flame emission spectroscopy. |

Learning outcomes of the course :

| To complete the theoretical concepts which are indispensable to instrumental analysis. To contribute to the general education of future pharmacists in both theoretical and practical terms in order to enable them to take a critical approach to their work. Teaching is centred on fundamental problems and those encountered during analysis of medicines. |

Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :

| Preparatory chemistry for the biomedical and pharmaceutical sciences.
Biostatistics.
Physical and mathematical bases of biomedical sciences.
Introduction to analytical chemistry. |

Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
|
| Theoretical teaching is supplemented by practical work: 40hours.
Quantitative analysis. Titration methods applied to medicine dosage. |

Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :

| Face-to-face.
Theoretical classes take the form of lectures. Classes take place on Monday mornings (8.30am - 10am) during the first term (Q5).
Practical work :
Place: student laboratory, level +4, tower 4 Building. B36.

Attendance at practical work is mandatory. |

Assessment methods and criteria :
|
| Theoretical work :
Exam written in accordance with the subject matter defined by the teaching and scientific staff: written exam. Oral re-sit if the marks in the written exam are insufficient (in the first session only).
Practical work :
Written tests. Written exam on the subject matter of the practical work including the obligatory prerequisites (Q4). The marks from the Practical Work are included in the final mark.
Reminder: Attendance at practical work is mandatory. Consequently, in conformity with article 6 of the general exam rules, a level of absenteeism that is too high may result in students being prohibited from sitting the exam. |

Training(s) :
|
| Training possibilities.
Student-teachers: possibilities are available for students interested in teaching analytical chemistry. The tasks involve supervising the practical work.
Research: outside the course and exam periods (on finishing the 2nd year of the Baccalaureat), motivated students may take part in a course in the laboratory (student-researchers). At the end of the course, there is a possibility of doing a PhD in the department. |
