Course contents :  
Part One: Chemical methods of analysis. Reactions in solutions, in terms of particles exchange (protons, ligands, electrons): acceptors-donors couples, conditional constants, distribution functions. Prediction of the reaction path: acid-bases, complexation, oxido-reduction, precipitation. Analytical applications: identification, separation and quantification of elements (gravimetry, titrimetry).

Second Part: Spectral methods of analysis. General technical layout: dispersive systems, detectors. Emission spectrometry: flame, arc, spark, ICP and ICP-MS. Atomic absorption. Molecular UV-Visible absorption. X-Ray spectrometry. Assessment of analytical data, Quality Insurance. Comparison and applications of various methods.
Learning outcomes of the course :  
To present with some details the most common analytical methods, on the basis of chemical and physical processes. In the frame of chemical methods, the main topic is quantitative analysis with emphasis on the precision concept. The second part (physical methods) is oriented towards qualitative and quantitative analysis of elements by spectral methods, together with an introduction to Quality Insurance
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :  
Good knowledge of the fundamentals of the courses on general chemistry and molecular and atomic spectroscopy

Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :  
Theoretical part: 25h, first semester; 15h, second semester . Laboratory work: 50 h, second semester: Analysis of a rock; titrimetry, colorimetry, gravimetry. Rehearsal: no rehearsal is planned in the programme but, on the request of the students,one afternoon can be organized with the following goals: - to (re)explain how to build a potential-pH for example, - to answer any fundamental question on the various topics of the course.

Notes and copies of transparencies are available for the totality of the course. These notes are accompanied with additional documents: one including exercises and one with the various laboratory experiments.

Reference books:
The students can obtain supplementary information, for instance in the excellent book: "ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY" by SKOOG, WEST and HOLLER
Assessment methods and criteria :  
The evaluation includes: 1) an interrogation with possible exemption (january, oral). 2) the main exam in june (one hour of written preparation followed by an oral discussion)

The scores distribution on the final score is as follows: 70% for the oral exam; 30% for the laboratory work. Note: if the score of the oral exam is below 10, the results obtained from the laboratory work are not taken into account in the final score.
