Master in oceanography, Research focus, 2nd yearToute l'année4
Lecturer :  Anne Goffart
Language(s) of instruction :
French language
Course contents :
Biodiversity and ecology of marine primary producers (mainly phytoplankton and macroalgae)
Learning outcomes of the course :
The aims of the course are :
  • to make students familiar with the importance of marine primary producers in the world ocean,
  • to acquire knowledge which allows to distinguish the great production systems,
  • to study the control of marine primary production by environmental factors,
  • to examine alterations of the dynamics of the marine primary producers by human pressure,
  • to introduce concepts of management of coastal waters based on phytoplankton (including toxic species) and macroalgae.
Emphasis is placed on Mediterranean species and ecosystems.
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :
General knowledge of biology and oceanology
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
Practical courses consist in laboratory work in Liège, dealing with phytopigment determination (chemotaxonomy). The field course is organized by the end of May at Stareso (Calvi, Corsica). It is focused on the study of phytoplankton dynamics and macroalgae diversity.
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
Schedule defined with the students
