Duration :  24h Th
Number of credits :
Bachelor in bioengineering, 1st yearFirst semester2,5
Lecturer :  Daniel Portetelle
Language(s) of instruction :
French language
Course contents :
. Molecular basis of the living world
. Cellular organizations and functions; eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells
. Tools of cell biology including new approaches
. Storage and expression of genetic information
. The eukaryotic cell cycle : phases, stages of mitosis, meiosis and fertilization, regulators of cell cycle progression, cytoskeleton and cellular motility, programmed cell death, ageing and cancer
. Cellular membranes systems : biogenesis, traffic and functions, protein sorting and transport, bioenergetics, mitochondrie, chloroplasts and internal organization of the nucleus
. Reception and transduction of environmental information
. Cellular interactions and the extracellular matrix: from cell to tissue and organs
. Within the limits of living cells : viruses, plasmids, viroïds and prions.
Learning outcomes of the course :
The cell biology is the base of the life chain : To understand how cells work and divide, we need to know a good deal about the identities and structures of molecules, how they fit together and what they do.
After completing the course the student is expected to
- understand and utilize cellular biology basic vocabulary
- discover unicellular and pluricellular living being.
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :
Basics in biology and general chemistry
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
Lectures : 24h
Recommended or required readings :
CALLEN, J.C., Biologie cellulaire, Dunod, Paris, 2005, 500 pages (in French)
Assessment methods and criteria :
Written examination (100%)
