BIOL0421-1  Molecular biology (Part II)

Duration :  45h Th, 30h Pr
Number of credits :
Bachelor in biomedical sciences, 2nd yearSecond semester6
One-year preliminary programme leading to the master in biomedical sciences4
Lecturer :  Agnès Noël
Language(s) of instruction :
French language
Course contents :
The course is divided into three main parts:
The first part (General principles of molecular biology) describes the concepts of gene structure, function and regulation, as well as the mutational instability of the genome.
The second part (Recombinant DNA techniques) presents the main techniques used in molecular biology in order to allow students to understand how results are obtained and to prepare them to a career in a research laboratory.
The third part (From molecular biology to medicine) presentsthe main applications of molecular biology technics, such as in vitro gene transfer, gene therapy, production of recombinant proteins and development of pathology-specific animal models.
Learning outcomes of the course :
1) present the basic concepts and challenges in molecular biology;
2) present the main technics;
3) present gene manipulation and gene "dissection" ;
4) understand how research results are obtained and how genetic engineering technics are spread to all sectors of biomedical sciences;
5) provide the necessary bases for a critical reading of scientific papers.
