ARLL0321-1  Building equipment: energy management

Duration :  36h Th
Number of credits :
Bachelor in architecture (Lambert Lombard), 3rd yearFirst semester3
Lecturer :  Henriette Michaux
Language(s) of instruction :
French language
Course contents :
The course title "Energy Management" refers to the architect's role in terms of the choice to install "accessible" energy with a view to ensuring the thermal comfort of a building.
The study of possibilities of using alternative, renewable energy is given in light of the issues raised by the use of fossil fuels.
Different forms of renewable energy (solar, wind, hydraulic, geothermal) are addressed in terms of their availability, the equipment required and how they can be adapted to the form of a building.
The concept of thermal comfort, addressed in the 2nd year Thermal course, contributes to the bigger issue of the thermal analysis of a building which determines, based on calorific loss (or input), the heating (or air-conditioning) requirements.
The physical principles of how installations operate will be recalled and applied to simple problems (combustion, phase transition, thermodynamic cycles, pressure drops ...).
Installing a heating system in a private dwelling is studied on three levels: production, distribution and emission. The principles of regulation will form the basis of the last chapter.
"Active" air-conditioning will not be addressed for individual houses. The 2nd year Thermal course would have addressed architectural mechanisms for passive thermal systems aiming to avoid overheating.
For specific uses (theatres, laboratories, hospitals...) where air-conditioning is necessary, air-conditioners are classified into two groups: direct expansion and iced water.
The course content will evolve around new technologies which will be developed and discussed.
