| THE TOWN AND ITS ORGANISATIONAL LOGIC Ways of approaching the Town: the concept of the mental map - mental and symbolic representation - the concept of the diagram.
Individuals' fundamental needs in terms of town organisation: introduction of the concepts of readability - identity and habitability.
The town as the result of a process of historical evolution: the town as a collection of traces and signs of the past, the town as a process of continuous evolution - different periods of urbanisation, their rationales and the nature of the urban fabric which they produced - conclusion: development of the concept of integration.
Attempts to characterise and define the town: morphological, political-administrative, social, and economic characteristics - diversity, density and continuity, functional components - conclusion: the town as a complex whole - definition and specificity of the urban space.
The major challenges of the town today and major theories on the town of the future.
