The workshop offers a practical approach to current land issues. It approaches different issues relating to how contemporary towns and landscapes are understood and constructed, as well as the architectural projects which fall within them.

The workshop should encourage students to understand the inherent complexity of town planning. Town planning requires fine-tuned understanding and interpretation. Reading the landscape, understanding how it is used, identifying social issues, taking a stance on questions of mobility ... these form the basis of a town planning project. Particular importance is placed upon the construction of the void as a unified space.

The concept of sustainable development is addressed as a paradigm which cross-cuts the urban and the architectural. Based on this concept, environmentalist and technical approaches are combined with social and cultural approaches to produce architectural and town planning projects.

Town planning is seen as the translator of and conduit for spatial change. Through this approach, students will become aware of the political dimension of architects' and town planners' work, as well as how to evaluate the social, cultural and environmental impact of the choices they make.
