ARCH0003-6  Method of construction of buildings I (Part 2)

Duration :  30h Pr, 2,5d FW
Number of credits :
Bachelor in engineering sciences, civil ingineer in architecture orientation, 2nd yearFirst semester4
Lecturer :  N...
Substitute(s) :  Mauro Baccarini
Language(s) of instruction :
French language
Course contents :
This course consists of studying traditional construction techniques used in Belgium. In particular it will look at the use of different construction systems and the interdependency of consecutive pieces of work on site.
The course includes the study of the following subjects within the context of practical work: - on site approach to building techniques (based on supervised and unsupervised site visits), - comparison between theoretical approaches and on site construction, - pre-dimensioning elements of construction.
Learning outcomes of the course :
By the end of the course, students should understand the different construction techniques which are traditionally used in Belgium, including their implementation and the interaction between different processes. Students will be able to measure the impact of the description of a construction upon its creation.
They will have acquired the skills required to choose the best building techniques in the context of a "large closed project" on a precise small scale (such as a single family dwelling or related project).
They will be able to conduct pre-dimensioning of simple structural elements of a building using nomograms.
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :
Course in Building Construction Techniques I (Part 1) ARCH0003-4.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
Practical work involves building knowledge through an on site approach alongside a bibliographical approach to construction techniques. It also covers pre-dimensioning calculation using nomograms for simple structural elements of a building.
Practical work will lead to drafting of reports and an oral presentation. This will involve both individual and group work. The assistant will illustrate different subjects during lectures, ensuring that students are developing their knowledge through ongoing discussions. Students' proactive participation in practical sessions is indispensable.
Compulsory site visits are organised throughout the year (two or three visits per year) and will be supervised by the assistant.Students will have to organise and undertake other visits.
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
Teaching is based on practical, face-to-face work sessions. These sessions, which will involve organised site visits, are planned in two-hour blocks every week.
Students undertake work during the sessions and continue it at home and on site.
Recommended or required readings :
None.
Assessment methods and criteria :
The course assessment only covers the practical work conducted during the year. Students' ability to understand and analyse will be assessed, as well as their ability to present information in a report, and apply this (an eye for the detail of execution, pre-dimensioning).
In the second session, students will be able to resubmit exercises for which they previously achieved a grade of less than 12/20.
Organizational remarks :
This course takes place in the first term.
