 | The major aspects emphasized in the specializalised chemistry didactics course (Partim I) are described below. This course favours an active participation of the students.
- Presentation of the legal framework of secondary school education in French-speaking Belgium: competence-based pedagogy
- The different teaching networks and their specificities: seminars are given by inspectors, school directors and teachers.
- Analysis of secondary school chemistry curricula
- Elements of didactics: students' motivation and preconceptions, teaching and learning approaches, didactical transposition ...
- Preparation for the teaching practicums: organization of small-scale teaching exercises
- Security and hygiene in science classrooms and laboratories
- Experimenting in science courses: 4th year curriculum
- Methods for the assessment of competences |
 |  | Observation practicums |

 | The students follow ten chemistry lessons given by secondary school teachers to become aware of the various learning and teaching approaches. |
 |  | Teaching practicums |

 | The students are in charge of one practicum during which they teach in secondary school classes under the supervision of experienced teachers. In addition to chemistry, they also teach a limited number of biology lessons. |
 |  | Reflexive practice |

 | Reflexive practices are based on the analysis, by the students and the members of the chemistry didactics group, of the practicum report, in order to define the appropriate feedback. |
Learning outcomes of the course :
 |  | Course and exercises |

 | At the end of this course (part I), the future teachers are expected to be able to:
- take care of the intellectual development of their students; - guide their students in their learning process; - assess the results of their educational work; - critically analyze their pedagogical performances; - use the present world communication techniques; - apply the laws involving security and hygiene in chemical laboratories. |
 |  | Observation practicums |

 | The students are expected to acquire the first elements to define critically their personal approach to teaching. |
 |  | Teaching practicums |

 | At the end of this practicum, the future teachers are expected to master the basic competences that define a professional teacher. This first level of competences will be strengthened and extended during the two practicums of course AESS0234 (part II). |
 |  | Reflexive practice |

 | Reflexive practices are one of the many tools which should help the future teachers to:
- develop among their students a citizenship-oriented behaviour;
- contribute to the intellectual development of each student;
- guide the learning processes;
- promote the development of transferable skills;
- assess the results of their teaching practice;
- work in a team-oriented way;
- use efficiently modern communication techniques;
- follow the legal regulations involving safety and health in a chemical environment. |
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :
 |  | Course and exercises |

 | - A good understanding of chemistry (bachelor level)
- Participation in the General Didactics Course |
 |  | Teaching practicums |

 | Active participation in the theoretical course and in the small-scale teaching exercices |
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
 |  | Course and exercises |

 | Practicums are integrated in the theoretical course (preliminary teaching practicums, development of an experiment-based teaching strategy) |
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
 |  | Course and exercises |

 | The course consists of seminars on the themes described in the previous sections. They take place each Wednesday afternoon (2:00 p.m. to 5:30 pm) until the end of December. The students are informed at the beginning of the academic year of the detailed schedule. |
 |  | Observation practicums |

 | The students choose themselves the lessons they are going to follow. They write a short report at the end. |
 |  | Teaching practicums |

 | The practicum will take place during the first quadrimester 2011-2012.The students are in charge of finding themselves the secondary school and their supervisor(s).
The students receive a detailed written information about the organizational aspects.
This practicum is prepared by small-scale teaching exercises in the framework of the theoretical course (AESS0216)
Reflexive practices are organized at the end of the practicum and when a member of the chemistry didactics laboratory comes to assess a lesson. |
 |  | Reflexive practice |

 | Reflexive practices are organized at the end of the practicum and when the members of the chemistry didactics group come to assess a lesson in a school. |
Recommended or required readings :
 |  | Course and exercises |

 | The students are provided with various printed documents concerning the different topics taught. |
Assessment methods and criteria :
 |  | Course and exercises |

 | The students will have to perform a personal project on a chemistry-oriented didactical theme, to be communicated during the academic year. A reasonable knowledge of the chemistry concepts involved in this work is a necessary condition to obtain a global grade equal to at least 10/20. |
 |  | Observation practicums |

 | If necessary, the report is discussed with the student but it is not assessed. |
 |  | Teaching practicums |

 | The quality of the practicum is assessed both by the supervisor and by the members of the chemistry didactics group.
A report must be written by the student and will be assessed. |
 |  | Reflexive practice |

 | The practicum report must include a critical analysis of the work performed. |
