AERO0024-1  Astrodynamics

Duration :  30h Th, 30h Pr
Number of credits :
Master in Aerospatial Engineering, research focus, 2nd yearSecond semester5
Master in Engineering Physics, in-depth approach, 2nd yearSecond semester5
Lecturer :  Gaëtan Kerschen
Language(s) of instruction :
French language
Course contents :
This class is intended to give students knowledge and a broader understanding of astrodynamics. By astrodynamics we mean that branch of astronautics that concerns the mathematical theory and the control of the movements of satellites, probes, orbiting vessels and space stations. Another purpose is to introduce students to the STK (Satellite Tool Kit) commonly in use in the aerospace industry. )
Learning outcomes of the course :
1. To understand the characteristics of orbits that are commonly used by satellites.
2. Detailed knowledge of the problem involving two bodies aux deux corps.
3. Calculation of orbital parameters of satellites.
4. Estimating perturbations that may be encountered in orbit.
5. Layout of manoeuvres in order to precisely and successfully accomplish a modification of orbit.
6. Elaboration of interplanetary trajectories.
7. Use of STK software program.
8. Use of Aerospace Blockset from Matlab\Simulink.
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :
Classical mechanics.
Basic knowledge of Matlab.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
Students will have opportunities to practice with STK and Matlab. This will allow them to practice using concepts introduced in the course (e.g., problem involving two bodies, perturbations).
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
1st semester
Assessment methods and criteria :
Grading will be based upon the realization of a project and an oral examination. 1. The project will be carried out by group of two students. Grading is based on the results obtained and on their interpretation. 2. The oral examination focuses on knowledge but above all on understanding of material presented in class. Mathematical development will not be required but knowledge of basic equations is requested.
